EMPA

Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa), Laboratory for Biomaterials

Empa is an interdisciplinary research and services institution for material sciences and technology development within the ETH Domain. Empa’s research and development activities are oriented to meeting the requirements of industry and the needs of our society, and link together applications-oriented research and the practical implementation of new ideas, science and industry, and science and society.

The Laboratory for Biomaterials is active in research and development of biomaterials and biomolecules for medical and industrially relevant applications. We develop new biocatalysts for green chemistry, which means to perform chemical reactions in a sustainable way or to enable difficult reactions with the help of enzymes. Microbial, biochemical as well as chemical processes are also applied to synthesize bio-based or biodegradable polymers such as polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). Biopolymers are further modified and functionalized, or are blended with suitable additives and processed using various techniques to enable novel applications through “green” chemistry.
